The Gripen weapon system was from the outset built to adapt to changing threats and operational requirements that armed forces face. Based on the proven Gripen C/D platform, the Gripen Next Generation (Gripen NG, also known as Gripen E/F) carries this heritage and continues to be a high-performance multi-role fighter with very low life cycle cost. In this presentation, the accomplishment of aircraft structural integrity assessment task for the Gripen NG version is outlined. The interpretation of applied Mil-specifications i.e. MIL-STD-1530C/JSSG-2006 and applicable Structures Bulletins is described with focus on essential engineering tasks affecting the fatigue service life and damage tolerance assessment effort. Examples from the airframe development stage are given such as mission analysis and operational profile development, loads analysis, structural analysis, local stress and damage analysis. Major structural differences between C/D versions and NG version are described and the consequences regarding ground and flight test verification needs and efforts are outlined. The service life monitoring system for individual aircraft tracking, which is a heritage from the C/D version, is outlined and necessary adaption for application to the NG version is pointed out.
