Business trends of GSM in consideration of IPR issue and royalty strategy

摘要

This paper aims to focus business strategies influenced by standardization process of 2nd Generation GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) in Europe. We analyzed the business strategies influenced by IPR issues using game theory to see how standardization effect on business. In the analysis, this paper will describe of strategy of Motorola which has succeeded in the international market applying essential patent terms. Finally we will talk about why Japanese manufacturers are struggling in mobile phone business. At the last JSST conference, we got the suggestions to add the patents number of each player in order to analyze mobile phone business strategies [1]. In this paper, we added the analysis using the patent numbers to find further relationship in the strategy.
