USING MOBILE DATA FOR WEATHER RESPONSE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has partnered with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Road Weather Management Program (RWMP) to develop and deploy sensor technology on MDOT fleet vehicles that collect near-real time vehicle data to support winter weather maintenance decision support systems and other connected vehicle initiatives. MDOT received a FHWA grant to collect and use Integrated Mobile Observations (IMO) 2.0 data to post motorist advisory warnings (MAW) to MDOT dynamic messages signs, MI Drive website, and support the 21st ITS World Congress - 2014 Detroit demonstrations. The system will collect near real-time environmental/weather and traffic related data from both fixed environmental and mobile sensors, process this information into advisories, alerts, or traveler information and disseminate the traveler information in near real-time for pre-trip applications. This paper will discuss the data collection system(s), application development, and functional deployment of motorist advisory warnings from weather events using fixed and mobile data.
