A STUDY TO CONSIDER THE MOST APPROPRIATE ALERT POINT TO ASSIST PEDESTRIANS CROSSING AT INTERSECTIONS

摘要

To assist pedestrians in crossing intersections safely, the most appropriate point for alerting pedestrians of approaching vehicles was analyzed by utilizing the head-turning behavior of pedestrians and by evaluating their reaction to an alarm. From the results of this study, it has been found that an alert point located 3 m away from the entry of a crosswalk is the most appropriate in the case of a pedestrian's starting position R. At this position, a pedestrian could confirm the approach of a vehicle before entering the crosswalk. And this brings about the urge of the pedestrian to turn his/her head in order to find the approaching vehicle, thereby having enough time to take avoidance behavior.
