The finite element absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) allows the use of general constitutive equations. It leads to models that relax the assumptions of Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam and Mindlin plate theories. In these new models the cross section of the element is allowed to deform and change its orientation. The resulting coupled deformation modes allow for developing more general models in biological and manufacturing applications. In this paper, these coupled deformation modes are discussed. Several beam models based on the general continuum mechanics approach, elastic line approach and the Hellinger-Reissner principle are discussed.
