CO_2 emissions from road transport have continued to grow, despite continuing improvements in heavy duty vehicle fuel economy. The EU will mandate a 15% reduction in fleet CO_2 emissions relative to 2019 levels by 2025, with a proposed 30% reduction relative to 2019 levels by 2030. To meet the long-term targets, technologies such as carbon neutral fuels, hybridisation, full electrification or conversion to hydrogen as an energy carrier may be required. In the nearer-term, significant CO_2 reductions may also be achieved through optimal operation of the vehicle and engine through the application of predictive control strategies.
