The HMI for future commercial vehicles can be seen as holistic systems. The handling of a vehicle is a dialogue without words. The vehicle is to anticipate what the driver needs in the current driving situation. And the driver has to be informed about the environmental condition he is operating in. Based on expectations of future operating models for commercial vehicles future challenges in the area of the human-machine interface (HMI) have to be solved. Consumer devices like Smartphone's have to be integrated and the assistance functions have to be presented without distraction. On top of a general increase in vehicle functions, future HMI concepts have to address upcoming trends such as automated driving (SAE Standard J3016 driving Levels 2-4). Automated driving functions require a next evolutionary step in the field of the dialogue between the driver and the vehicle. As driver assistance technology develops further towards automated driving, the HMI has to meet new requirements. The vehicle should always be ready to serve the driver. Therefore the HMI has to flexibly adapt to the traffic situation and to the driver's momentary status as well. Interior cameras are playing an important role for this. They will help to close the information loop between the driver, the vehicle and vehicle's environment. This will become more important with automated driving functions in particular. On the one hand they need to be activated easily. On the other hand, the handover back to the driver must take place intuitively and in a safe manner. Increasing traffic density and ever richer vehicle functionality make it more important to prioritize information. That is one of the core targets of the holistic HMI technologies as head-up display (HUD) and additional ways to inform the driver. Depending on the drivers attention different ways of presenting the information are necessary to get the relevant information instantaneously known by the driver. Holistic HMI have to use more information channels towards the driver (auditory, visual, haptic) to inform him properly. The logic behind the HMI has to select the information needed in the particular driving situation and the vehicle has to have a driver model to anticipate the driver's status.
