Advances in the development of a novel CVT for medium duty trucks

The aim of this project was to design, build and test a prototype CVT for trucks and buses which are used in urban traffic. The basic design is a so-called Series-CVT, using two CVT's in series. This principle allows for a large ratio span and seamless and fast acceleration without power interruption over the full span. In addition, it is possible to operate the combustion engine at its ideal operation line for minimum fuel consumption. Great attention has been given to minimize the power consumption of the hydraulic CVT actuation system. The CVT is of V-Chain type with a torque capacity of 750 Nm and a ratio span of 11.7. The paper deals with the following main subjects: 1. Concept & design of the Series CVT; 2. Highly efficient hydraulic CVT controller; 3. Simulations & test results. The project is a joint effort between Gear Chain Industrial (GCI) and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and subsidized by a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
