Warning signs alert road users of upcoming hazards. They are most effective when understood by drivers easily. This study investigated the influence of drivers’ characteristics in understanding warning signs on highway work zones (WZs) in India. Delhi-Jaipur section of National Highway (NH) - 8 was selected for the study which included widening of the existing four lanes (divided) into six lanes. A total of 122 drivers were interviewed at nearest restaurants along the highway WZs. The study was conducted for four days during daytime. Results show that over 90% drivers were able to correctly identify more than two warning signs out of six different signs shown to them. Multinomial logistic regression was carried out to examine the effect of drivers’ age, driving experience and frequency of driving on their level of understanding. Statistical results show that there is no significant relationship between drivers’ characteristics and level of understanding. The results of the study would help transportation professionals to design the traffic signs to make them more effective.
