Certification of the rapidly growing unmanned aircraft systems to ensure their safe operation in the National Airspace System represents a significant challenge to the Federal Aviation Administration and the aviation community. The development of a validation and verification (V&V) framework, compatible with an assurance case / safety case argument, for model-based control systems and adaptive control systems is discussed in this paper. The work documented is funded as a 3-year project by the NASA Ames Research Center.
