The pickling step is a major operation in the manufacturing process of steel strips and it often acts on the final quality of the strip delivered to the customer. To avoid all risks to generate under-pickling defects, the on-line operators often limit the strip speed in the pickling baths, so limiting the pickling productivity, sometimes with excess. Furthermore, the pickling state assessment is usually performed by a visual observation of the strip surface. This human inspection is a subjective analysis for which it is very difficult to guarantee the same performance level every day without using a significant margin. An automatic system of strip surface monitoring will be more efficient and would allow the decrease of this margin. It is what we have developed.
