In the ladle furnace liquid steel is heated up to temperatures necessary for subsequent treatment and casting. The melt is heated by the electric arcs at the steel bath surface. Gas stirring improves energy distribution in the ladle and temperature gradients in the melt are reduced. After heating the final temperature is usually determined by a spot measurement with a thermocouple. However, the measured temperature only is representative for the entire melt, if the temperature distribution is homogeneous. Temperature fluctuations will reduce the significance of spot measurements, as the result will vary strongly depending on time and position. Therefore, temperature fluctuations during the homogenisation phase can only be measured by a more frequent or continuous temperature measurement.
