Pilot Plants are considered to be the important tool for tackling the scale up problems. Even though the quantity of the chemicals used is less compared to a commercial plant, they are capable of creating significant hazards and risks. Hence the hazards and risks posed by pilot plants are critical. The increasing number of accidents in research laboratories and pilot plants all over the world is a testimony to the above fact. Many organizations struggle to determine what guidelines they should apply to their own units. It is essential that the risks at pilot plants and laboratories are to be assessed and properly controlled to protect lives, property and environment.
