Status of Pre-Conceptual Design Studies for the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP)

The Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) is a very high temperature reactor concept, proposed by the US DOE at the Idaho National Laboratory, to be capable of producing high temperature process heat suitable for the economical production of hydrogen, electricity and other process heat applications. A Westinghouse-led, Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) based consortium was awarded a pre-conceptual engineering contract in October 2006 by DOE's Idaho National Laboratory (INL) operator, Battelle Energy Alliance, to define how pebble bed reactor technology will satisfy the mission of the NGNP. The Westinghouse Electric Co. international team includes Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Proprietary) Limited and M-Tech Industrial (Pty) Ltd of South Africa, and Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure Inc., Technology Insights, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., Nuclear Fuel Services Inc. and Kadak Associates Inc. of the US.
