Nuclear and radiation safety during long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel of 27/VT and KM-1 land-based prototypes while development of reactor installations with lead-bismuth liquid metal coolant created for Alfa-class nuclear submarines has been studied in the framework of the IPPE-BNL-ISTC Project #2710p. The results achieved are presented in the final Project report [1]. This paper includes the main results of the above study with the focus on influence on system reactivity of a possible water penetration into the volume of the KM-1 prototype spent removable block repository, as well as analysis of emergency situation consequences caused by such a penetration. Based on this consideration the assessment of radiation risks to the health of local regional populations, including that of Finland, Estonia and Latvia, has been made.
