In this paper, computer aided design and transient Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) of an Inducton motor (IM) are performed for both 2D and 3D models. Using magnetostatic FEA to examine of the performance of IM is recently well known and accepted method. In this paper, instead of magnetostatic FEA, transient FEA is implemented in order to have more detailed and precise information on the performance of IM. By means of this approach, dynamic effects of imperfect operating conditions, such as voltage un-balance, on the performance of IM can be modelled and analysed. Moreover, by using 3D transient FEA, effect of some constructional variances such as rotor bar skew rate, are easly modelled and analysed. When compared to equivalent circuit based transient simulation, transient FE 2D and 3D analyses obviously give more realistic results in the design analysis and the optimisation of IM.
