OSHA 1910.119 explains that a catastrophic release is “a major uncontrolled emission, fire, or explosion, involving one or more highly hazardous chemicals, that presents serious danger to employees in the workplace”. The intent of mechanical integrity programs is to “assure the continued integrity of process equipment” and that mechanical integrity programs “include the identification and categorization of equipment and instrumentation, inspections and tests, testing and inspection frequencies”.
