It is a difficult and time-consuming task to create synthetic seismic data that is high quality enough to carry out complex studies such as reservoir characterization or seismic inversion tests. To resolve this problem we have developed a method to create stratigraphically rich sedimentary volumes that would be impossible to generate with the more traditional hand-drawing methods of building models. These sedimentary stacks represent the geological concept of depositional environments through facies deposited via defined probability functions. The resulting sediments can then be morphed into any desired structure for creating more realistic synthetic seismic datasets that more accurately capture the statistics of the modeled environment.
