Horses most commonly incur a penile or preputial laceration while jumping a barrier or attempting to breed a mare over a fence. Preputial haematomas usually arise from rupture of subfascial vessels caused by a kick to the erect penis or from bending of the penis during coitus. Fresh penile and preputial wounds should be sutured, and horses with a preputial haematoma should be treated by applying a compression bandage to the penis and by hydrotherapy. Penile and preputial lacerations or haematomas can result in paraphimosis or phimosis.
