Case Report: Cleaning Efficacy of a Chlorinated Alkaline Detergent for Reduced Temperatures in Milking Systems

Cleaning and disinfection of equipment used for transfer and storage of milk is important to ensure a high standard of food hygiene. Traditional CIP in dairies requires high water temperatures in combination with a detergent to remove milk residues inthe pipeline, which affect milk quality if not removed properly. Lack of hot water for cleaning can create a challenge for maintaining high milk quality in dairies in many countries. For instance, a study of 175 herds in Brazil showed that 32% of dairyfarms did not have sufficient hot water supply to clean the milking equipment (Souza et al, 2005). Thus, availability of detergents that are effective at cleaning at lower temperatures is extremely important representing a key step to ensure the production of high quality milk. Added is the economical benefit that can be obtained from reduced energy use to heat water (French et al, 2013). Presented below are cleaning efficacy results when a reduced temperature detergent (DeLaval RTD~(TM)) was used in pipeline cleaning in two commercial dairies in Brazil.
