DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MAGNESIUM INDUSTRY

In the last 20 years the magnesium industry has witnessed significant changes. Firstly, capacity and production has grown remarkably to reach in 2012 a level in the order of 850,000mt per year. Secondly, a large part of production takes place now in China while the production in the Western world (USA, Brazil, Israel) was in 2012 estimated to be just over 90,000mt. Lastly, the three main market segments; aluminium alloying, die casting and steel desulfurization, have also evolved and shifted significantly. This presentation will examine the most recent developments in production and market opportunities. New production projects and technology will also be reviewed.
