Classical swine fever virus (CSFV), a pestivirus found within the family Flaviviridae, causes a serious and highly contagious hemorrhagic disease known as classical swine fever or hog cholera in wild and domesticated pigs. CSFV was eradicated from theUnited States in 1978, but is endemic in Asia, parts of Europe and Africa, and Central and South America. The major neutralizing epitope of CSFV is contained within the E2 envelope glycoprotein. Modified-live and E2 subunit vaccines targeting CSFV are currently available, but both types have drawbacks that limit their usage in eradication and emergency vaccination campaigns.
