DEVELOP THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TO IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Medco E&P Indonesia together with the community surrounding the company operation areas have attempted to develop and implement the community development package program. The package program is named organic farming system program. The program objectives are ensuring environment sustainability, global warming reduction, increasing the income of community, community self- sufficient and establishing local institutions. The objectives are achieved through capacity building and institutional building of the community target group and multi stakeholders the engagement approach. Medco E&P Indonesia has implemented the program by encouraging the engagement of the local community and theirs stakeholders, with various phases such as assessment the potential of the local resources, opportunities, problems, obstacles, formulate the program, design the activities and the time line of implementation, implementation activities, monitoring and evaluation on the program implementation. Assistance is offered to the community targeted group in the form of courses, workshops and supervising in the field and the program is continually monitored to optimize the chances of success. Before encouraging the engagement, there is enlightening process and stimulating the community target group’s motivation and self- confidence. The program has being implemented since 2009. The results can be categorized as benefit of community target group social and economic, benefits for environment and the impacts for company. The benefits of community social and economics are increasing income, self-sufficient, establishing the good corporations and local institutions in community. The benefits for environment are reducing water using for agriculture, reducing production methane, CO, and CO2 gas and land quality (fertilizing) improvement. The impacts for the company are getting license to operate, achieving better relationship with stakeholders and receipt some award such as receipt Gold Rating PROPER and United Nations _ Millennium Development Goals Award Recognitions and Awards. Organic farming system program is an effective program to implement the sustainable development in community development program by the upstream oil and gas company. Organic farming system program is an effective social risk mitigation program also.
