Following the exploitation of oil/gas fields, production will begin a progressive decline and subsequently reach the mature stage through pressure depletion. Operationally, mature fields face typical problems such as inefficient drainage, production decline, increase in water cut and sand production. Production-improvement techniques such as EOR, improved perforation and stimulation methods, new completion techniques, artificial-lift optimization, water and sand control management, light workover, infill drilling, horizontal and multilateral drilling, can maintain and even boost the recovery from mature fields. As mature fields mature, production-improvement techniques can become more difficult to implement, particularly for old fields developed in 1900's. Integration of well engineering and reservoir engineering are critical in mature field development. The study presented herein describes problems in Mature Field X Indonesia and methodologies to enhance declining. This field has been developed since early 1900's and entered production decline phase decades ago. The aim of this study is to provide a strategic management plan that integrates the GGR (geologic, geophysics, and reservoir) aspects, production target, workover and drilling aspects to better model the dynamic of fields and eventually improve production. Planning management is crucial in mature field development to determine best treatment techniques. Most mature fields in Indonesia have archived only minimal data adding another layer of difficulty to remedial field development. Development operations based on inadequate reservoir analysis will not improve production and may in fact decrease production. Global experiences and successes in other mature fields will be incorporated in this comprehensive study to be compared to this Field X development plan.
