摘要

The avian hemogram is usually performed using manual cell counting techniques and differential count determined by light microscopy in veterinary diagnostic laboratories. There is no standard automated technique for avian blood cell count and differentiation to date and the avian hematology report is often limited to PCV and total leukocyte count but frequently lacks thrombocyte, polychromatophyl, and erythrocyte parameters. These shortcomings in birds are primarily due to the fact that erythrocytesare nucleated, which precludes the use of automated analyzers programmed to perform mammal complete blood counts. Additionally, to date there is no standard avian antibody panel, which would allow cell differentiation by immunophenotyping across all commonly-seen bird species.
