Tubesheet boiler protection systems (ceramic ferrule linings) are the most fragile refractory systems in the entire SRU and maintaining the integrity of this lining is critical to reliable operation of the Sulphur Plant. Tubesheet lining problems are often the first symptom of a problem, regardless of origin (plant design, installation, operation and/or maintenance). Any design or operational issue is likely to affect the integrity of ferrule lining, and often results in an unexpected outage. The impact of uncontrolled start-ups, shut-downs, and temperature excursions are well documented and the materials used in today's systems have been engineered to provide some resistance to these conditions (improved thermal shock resistance, strength at elevated temperature etc.).
