Particular strains of E. coli are the major cause of urinary tract infections (UTI) and infection is initiated by attachment of the protein FimH at the terminus of Type 1 pili to the terminal α-D-mannopyranose (α-D-Manp) unit of trimannosides attached to the protein uroplakinla on the surface of the urinary tract. Particular ot-D-Manp or α-D-Manp-(1->3)-β-D-Manp- derivatives have been identified that bind well to FimH. Such compounds are potential antiadhesion drugs against UTIs and some have been shown to be effective for the treatment of UTIs.
