Measurement of the saturation of carboxyhemoglobin (CO-Hb) in postmortem blood is important inforensic practice, as carbon monoxide is the leading cause of death by poisoning in Japan. Here we discuss thestability of CO-Hb in stored postmortem blood samples. The value of CO-Hb obtained at the time of autopsywas compared with those obtained following the storage of blood samples at 4 degrees Celsius for periods from1-24 months after autopsy. Quantitation of CO-Hb was performed using a portable oximeter AVOX 4000. In thisstudy, we concluded that the value of CO-Hb is stable up to 24 months.
