In the years 1991-2011 the groundwater level, mineralization of organic nitrogen, the content of nitrate- and ammonium-nitrogen, and changes in habitat moisture and meadow plant communities were studied in 9 permanent sites located on organic soils incentral Poland. The aim of this study was to assess mineralization of organic nitrogen compounds and the changes taking place in organic soils and meadow communities due to the elevation of groundwater table. High groundwater level limited the actual mineralization of organic nitrogen compounds and the content of N-NO3. The re-colonization by communities of the class Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae and Phragmitetea was observed.
