Facilitating Communication and Knowledge Transfer on EDCs and PPCPs Among Water Utilities through a National Utility Network

Various endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been detected in water supplies. The potential effects on aquatic species are uncertain and are a topic of ongoing study. Water quality guidelines and monitoring requirements vary from state to state and may be in the early stages of development. Meanwhile, utilities face the challenge of keeping up with the latest information, making informed decisions, and communicating key messages regarding EDCs and PPCPs despite uncertainty. A national utility network has been established to enhance collaboration among water utilities, and improve each utility’s response to challenges posed by EDCs and PPCPs (Water Research Foundation Project 4261). The network provides a secure electronic “go-to” website resource for utilities to share documents, information, and other tools and materials related to EDCs and PPCPs and help utilities establish or improve EDCs and PPCP programs, identify and formulate meaningful key messages, and communicate with the public and press.
