Sugarcane contains 60-70% water, generated in the form of sugar condensate vapour during the process of concentration of juice in multiple effect evaporators. Sugar condensate is rich in organic, contains dissolved impurities, and has a temperature of 65°-85°C. After treatment to remove the organics and dissolved impurities using organic reactors and purification filters, sugar condensate can be recovered for re-use in boiler feed and cooling tower make up water. Ion Exchange (India) Ltd. conducted a lab scale treatability study on removal of organic impurities from the sugar condensate using various treatment methods. The study showed more than 95% elimination of organic impurities-The organics in the treated effluent were found to be below detectable limits. Based on the treatability results and schemes, a pilot plant was fabricated and studies conducted. Treatment trials showed that the selected scheme can treat the condensate and make it usable for cooling tower make up/ boiler feed. The heat from the raw condensate can also be recovered and used for heating the treated condensate for boiler feed. The process leads to more than 95% recovery from the condensate.
