EARLY EVALUATION OF CROSSES FOR VARIETAL IMPROVEMENT IN SUGARCANE WITH RESISTANCE TO RED ROT AND TOLERANCE TO MOISTURE STRESS

Thirty eight bi parental crossed and 18 GCs representing broad spectrum of variability were sown to raising seedling nursery during 2007-08. Five hundred and twenty genotypes were selected in seedling nursery and planted during 2008-09 to raise settling nursery in augmented randomized complete block design along with four standards viz., Co 6907, 87A298, Co 7219 and Co 86249. In selection nursery (2009-10), 114 clones were selected based on cane yield, their components and quality characters. Out of 114 clones studied in selection nursery, 27 clones were selected based on number of millable canes at harvest, cane yield, their components, juice quality parameters and other desirable morphological characters. Based, on the mean data, the crosses viz. CoC 90063 x CoA7602 and CoC 90063 x Co 94008 for number of canes per clump, cane volume and cane yield, ISH 100 xC81615 Co 85002 GC and CoC 90063 x CoA 7602 for single cane weight and cane diameter; 81V 48 x ISH 69 and Co85002GC for cane length; 81V 48 x CoA 7602 and CoC 671 x CoT 8201 for HR brix per cent were identified as the best in seedling nursery. The clones viz., 2008A15, 2008A74, 2008A104, 2008Al 12, 2008A113. 2008A120, 2008A160, 2008A171, 2008A187, 2008A234, 2008A236, 2008A241, 2008A357, 2008A380, 2008A387, 2008A427, 2008A444, 2008A465 and. 2008A470 were identified as the best clones based on higher mean values for shoot population at 120 DAP, NMC at 300 DAP, NMC at harvest, cane diameter, single cane weight, CCS yield and cane yield in both the clonal stages. Nine promising clones viz., 2008A 15, 2008A 73, 2008A 113, 2008A 124, 2008A 171, 2008A 187, 2008A 234, 2008A 236 and 2008A 465 showed out standing performance for cane yield, sugar yield, yield components, resistance to red rot and tolerance to moisture stress in the present investigation.
