Parental influence on red rot resistance in progenies of varietal crosses in sugarcane

Present investigation conducted in Bihar, India clearly indicated that offsprings of Cos8436 x MS6847 and Co7201 x Co87267 showed relatively higher percentage of red rot resistant progenies (more than 50%) as compared to other 10 crosses. CoS8436 was resistant to all the races of the red rot pathogen when used as female or male parent in crossing with R/MS or S parents contributed more resistance (41.5 to 58.3%) to the offsprings (Colletotrichum falcatum [Glomerella tucumanensis]) compared to other resistant clones such as Co 7201, Co 87267 and BO 91. However, BO 91, when used as female parent in crossing with susceptible male parents, also appeared to be a potential donor of red rot resistance to the offsprings.
