Antimicrobial Usage for. Mastitis Treatment on Large Wisconsin Dairy Farms

Mastitis remain the most common bacterial disease of adult dairy cows (Ruegg, 2017) and accounts for the greatest proportion of antimicrobial usage (AMU) occurring at dairy farms (Pol, 2007). The high incidence of mastitis is associated with a wide diversity of risk factors and has a negative effect on farm profitability through outcomes such as increased bulk tank somatic cell count and increased AMU. No previous studies have reported AMU for mastitis on large US dairy farms. The objectives of thisstudy are to describe AMU for mastitis control on large dairy farms in Wisconsin and investigate associations between selected risk factors and AMU.
