Use of buffered Swiffer~R cloth for collection of PRRSv from the snout and face of growing pigs

With exhibition pigs, neonates or newly placed pigs, sample collection utilizing a rope to collect oral fluids can be difficult or impossible. Additionally, easier and lower cost alternatives to collecting serum for ante-mortem diagnostic testing forporcine reproductive and respiratory virus (PRRSV) would be beneficial. Buffered Swiffer~R wipes have been used successfully to collect environmental samples for detection of PRRSV on inanimate objects. The purpose of this study was to determine if PRRSVcan be successfully detected in samples collected from the snout and face of viremic pigs utilizing buffered Swiffer~R wipes.
