This paper provides the setup and an account of a proof-of-concept pilot study for an on-going research project. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the relationship, if any, between role value and role conflict, and employee retention. Pilot survey data was collected and analyzed for a component command of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), NAVFAC Washington. Regression analysis was used to assess the relationships between role value, role conflict, and retention. The results reported herein are based upon the limited pilot study, a preliminary step to the main study, which will include a larger sample and a Structural Equation Modeling analysis. Results from the pilot study indicate that role value is related to work-home conflict and does impact participation in flexible work policies. The apparent relationship between participation in flexible work policies and work role value may provide targeted retention opportunities for managers.
