The IORS will provide a more robust amateur radio station on the ISS with some new capabilities. Themost significant upgrades are the replacement of the existing transceiver, TNC, and power supply hardwarewith the more capable Kenwood D710G transceiver and its internal data controller, plus the custom-built MVPS. The new IORS equipment is common to both the US and Russian Operating Segmentsand their different power systems. This provides a redundant equipment set that can be moved fromone ISS segment to another as necessary and without the need for reconfiguration. It also allows thepossibility of simultaneous operations, such as a voice repeater in one segment and a digipeater in theother. As such, the IORS represents a vital upgrade to the ARISS system.
