Three boys, two continents and a spot of light. Little did Richard, Jan and Owen know how that spot oflight moving slowly cross the sky would determine their lives.The spot of light was, of course, the first artificial earth satellite, Sputnik 1, launched by the SovietUnion in October 1957. Among other things, it lit up the imagination of those boys who became spacenuts soaking up every bit of information about satellites, space, rockets and astronomy. Not that therewas much serious information as this was the height of the competition between the Soviet Union andthe USA – the Cold War.
