There are two major aims when growing strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch), to produce good yields and high fruit quality. Production of strawberry using a hydroponic greenhouse system is increasing, however, there are still problems regarding low yield, poor quality and sensitivity to unfavorable indoor conditions. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of polyamines, applied using a polyamine spray, on vegetative characteristics, growth, flowering and yield of strawberry. Two cultivars, 'Paros' and 'Selva', and two polyamines, spermidine and putrescine, applied at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mM, with 4 replications were used in this experiment. Treatments were imposed twice, the first after plants were established (having 4-5 fully expanded leaves) and the second, at the beginning of flowering: Results indicated that spermidine increased chlorophyll content of both cultivars whereas it was decreased by putrescine application. Putrescine increased petiole length, whereas spermidine had no effect. By increasing the concentration of both polyamines, leaf area and fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots was increased. Both polyamines increased flower number per truss and yield per plant. Both polyamines caused a decrease in runner number. Overall, results of our study indicated that polyamines improved vegetative characteristics, growth, flowering and yield of strawberries grown in hydroponic production.
