Evaluation of autonomic nervous function by an index of peripheral vascular regulation

Power spectrum analysis of heart rate variability is usually used to assess the changes in autonomic nervous activity. However, it is difficult to know the quick change in the physiological effect from the analysis because of large inter-individual difference and low time-resolution. In this study, the index of peripheral vascular regulation based on system identification method is proposed. The validity of the index was investigated using cold presser test. The proposed vascular regulation index increased significantly during immersing hand in cold water. The results indicate that the proposed parameter may be useful index for autonomic regulation.
