Management of the Overactive Bladder Syndrome (OAB)

Introduction: The overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome is defined by the International Continence Society (ICS) and International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) as 'urinary urgency, usually accompanied by frequency and nocturia, with or without urgency urinary incontinence, in the absence of urinary tract infection or other obvious pathology' (1). It is a common, under-diagnosed and therefore under-treated condition and although on its own it is not life threatening, it can have a detrimental effect on physical functioning and psychological well-being, as well as significantly impairing quality of life (2).
