The major challenge in short-term production planning is its complexity, especially with regard to its dynamic nature. In practice, typical methods to deal with its dynamic nature are the use of increased lead times, flexibility of resources, and replanning. The purpose of this paper is to find out why these methods should be used and when they should be used. This is done by first studying the methods from the cost, planning and lead-time points of view. In addition, numerical experiments later in the paper show how the methods behave together in a make-to-order environment. The results show that the selection of the methods used involves several challenges, e.g. inexpensive solutions such as replanning and planned lead times can become expensive when their usage increases.
