The development of eddy current inspection of the graphite bricks that comprise AGR interstitial channels is currently being pursued by EdF Energy. The eddy current probes are designed for detection of subsurface cracks, but can also be used for detection of bore cracks and measurement of graphite electrical resistivity. Modelling studies have been conducted by AMECFW to reduce the technical risk of developing the Inspection Tool. Comparisons have been made between experimental data and simulated signals generated using both the NDE simulator CIVA and the finite element simulator OPERA-3D. This paper describes the modelling studies conducted and presents a comparison of the results. Agreement between simulated and test amplitudes for an axial slot was within a factor of two in absolute terms. There was a tendency for the ratio of simulated to test amplitude to increase with frequency. There was good agreement between the CIVA and OPERA amplitudes and phases.
