Following a programme of independent trials conducted by a rail freight operator, Alternating Current Field Measurement, ACFM, has been selected as the NDT technology of choice for the integrity management programme of rail waggon axles. As a result, TSC Inspection Systems have developed an integrated ACFM solution consisting of a large array probe contained in a motorised scanner featuring an automated defect detection system with simple "PASS/FAIL" reporting. This paper covers the challenges in the development of this new ACFM system, its performance on test specimens and experiences from the field around its deployment.
