In this paper, we present a novel design of UHF RFID tag antenna as a sensor for corrosion detection. UHF RFID based non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) can take the advantages of long distance communication with passive low-cost tag, achieving remote sensing and monitoring system. The challenges to apply RFID for corrosion sensing are communication capability and sensitivity in metallic environment. To maximise sensitivity without cost of communication distance, a patch antenna design using radiation patch for communication and meanderline feed line for impedance matching and corrosion sensing is presented. This antenna has been manufactured and tested with corrosion samples using UHF RFID development kit. Simulation and experiment results show that this antenna can identify different stages of corrosion.
