This paper presents a study on the mode conversion which is caused by the interaction between ultrasonic guided waves and transducer at the free edge of an aluminum rod. At the chosen excitation frequency, L(0,1), T(0,1) and F(1,1) are the possible modes which could be excited. The main focus is on the mode conversion between the first order non-axisymmetric flexural mode F(1,1) and axisymmetric L(0,1). As the excitation is in the longitudinal direction, the T(0,1) mode is not excited. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been carried out to investigate this mode conversion behaviour. The FEA results have shown that a mode conversion of F(1,1) to L(0,1) wave mode and contrariwise have been noticed due to the effect of the transducer mountings on the specimen.
