African horse sickness virus (AHSV) is able to successfully propagate in different species, including equine hosts and midge vectors. The result of infection in these species is distinct. In horses, the virus causes the OIE-notifiable disease African horse sickness (AHS), often culminating in death. Insect vectors are however able to sustain asymptomatic AHSV infection. The reason for this difference is unknown and crucial for the development of a framework for better long-term vector and disease control.
