Despite many advances in assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), the rates of embryo implantation are still low. Many ARTs require superovulation. Chlomiphene citrate (CC) is the first-line and most commonly used oral agent for ovulation induction. Gonadotropins are used as second-line therapy for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who have failed to respond to CC. Gonadotropins are associated with high risks of ovarian hyperstimulation. Anastrozole is clinically effective in ovulation induction, but it has been less studied. Understanding of the effects of anastrozole on the developing blastocyst at the uterine level enables manipulation of the uterine receptivity to control fertility and improve ART outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal dose for anastrozole as a superovulator and achieve pregnancy in the Wistar rats. The study was also designed to determine the effects of anastrozole on the uterine morphology during early pregnancy using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
