Microwave irradiation and enzymatic hydrolysis were applied to purify biopolyester in green tea residue called cutin (a feedstock of aliphatic compounds alternative to oil plants) by removing contaminated condensed phenolics using alkaline reagent. The weight loss attained more than 80% by after alkaline cooking (1% NaOH solution) under electromagnetic field and successive enzymatic saccharification. The microwave irradiation exceeded conventional heating in weight loss by 38%, and could reduce the duration of treatment to 37% showing microwave irradiation is an effective method for purification of cutin.
