Large deposits present computational challenges to today’s commercial orebody modelling systems that are based on conventional block models. We describe a system that is specifi cally engineered to model and visualise large deposits. Central to the system is linear octree encoding of conventional block models and real-time conversion of three-dimensional (3D) meshes to linear octrees. We provide both methodological treatment and practical experience in implementing such a system. A commercial implementation is also presented to demonstrate the validity of the approach.
